The bustling streets of Bambang, Manila, have long been the heartbeat of the Philippines’ medical supply trade. It was here, among the handful of pioneer storefronts, that a young entrepreneur began a journey that would eventually redefine access to affordable and high-quality medical products for millions of Filipinos. Rodoflo “Rudy” Medina, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Medical Depot, created a legacy of service that has spanned over 30 years and three generations.
Humble Beginnings of Rodolfo “Rudy” Medina
The history of Medical Depot began in 1991, but the foundation was laid years earlier. Starting in 1986, Rudy Medina learned the ropes of the industry by assisting his father’s business. Tasked with purchasing raw materials, he spent his early years sourcing different types of steel needed to manufacture surgical instruments. Spending time on technical tasks such as welding and operating lathe machines gave him the practical knowledge of tools that would eventually support his own company.
Building on his father’s mentorship, Rudy Medina shifted his focus to sales. He noticed a significant gap in the market: major hospitals such as UST Hospital, St. Luke’s, and De Los Santos Medical Center lacked regular sales representatives who visited to provide medical supplies, surgical instruments, and orthopedic implants.
This observation allowed him to become a familiar face across ENT, Orthopedic, and OB-GYN departments. He seized the opportunity, becoming the go-to person for doctors who needed medical supplies, surgical instruments, and hospital equipment.
Since many resident doctors had limited funds at the time, Rudy Medina established trust by allowing them to purchase through credit. These professionals became his first loyal customers. By 1990, these deep-rooted relationships within the medical community provided the foundation for his own independent enterprise.
Forging an Independent Path
Driven by the ambition to establish his own foothold, Rudy Medina founded R Medina Surgical Enterprises in 1991. He opened his first store along Rizal Avenue in Manila with around ₱100,000 in starting capital. Rudy Medina built the amount gradually through profits earned from selling the inventory borrowed on credit from his father and other local pioneers who trusted his work ethic.
“My father believed that if you are a good businessman, you don’t need to begin with a large investment; you need stocks, because stocks are as good as money,” Chairman of Medical Depot, Rudy Medina, recalls of his early days.
By this time, he had already built a reputation among professionals, allowing him to transition from an apprentice to a business owner with a loyal client base. His approach was simple yet effective: listen to what the clients needed and find a way to provide it.
Rapid Store Expansion
Rudy Medina quickly noticed that his first store could generate around ₱1 million in monthly sales. He decided to replicate this success by opening a second and then a third store along Rizal Avenue, staying within the area between Recto and Tayuman in Manila. Each new location consistently matched the monthly revenue of the original store. This strategy led to a rapid expansion where he eventually managed ten stores. Collective monthly sales climbed to ₱10 million in 1995, a figure that signaled the scale of his business.
Education and Leadership
While deepening his role in the business, Rudy Medina remained committed to his personal growth. He balanced his responsibilities at work with his studies, even funding his tuition for a time to show his dedication to his education and the trade.
Rudy Medina began his academic journey at the University of the East (UE), where he spent two years studying for a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) major in Accounting. He eventually shifted his focus to the BSBA major in Management at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). This degree was earned via the Non-Traditional Study Program, which recognized his extensive professional experience and business achievements. He celebrated this milestone during graduation ceremonies held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
A desire to better serve the community prompted Rudy Medina to enroll in the Philippine Law School. He viewed legal education as a way to lead more effectively and advocate for the people he represented. This academic pursuit was deeply connected to his work as a public servant, where he served as the Barangay Chairman for Barangay 325, Zone 32, District 3, in Manila, for 11 years. During his tenure, Rudy Medina represented his community in various local and international conferences, including conventions in China and Hong Kong.
Beyond his business ventures, Rudy Medina took on leadership roles such as serving two terms as the president of Lions Club International. Representing the organization across Asia and the United States gave him a global perspective on management and community service. Practical grit and academic acumen remain drivers of the company’s continued success.
A Partnership Built on Faith and Dedication

Growing the business was never a solitary pursuit. In 1995, his wife, Lilian “Baby” Medina, joined the growing business and became one of Rudy Medina’s key partners during its formative years.
Baby Medina, currently Vice Chairwoman of the company, played a vital role in strengthening the company’s foundation through hands-on support and shared commitment. Her dedication helped the business into a growing network of medical supplies, surgical instruments, and hospital equipment stores.
With God’s help, Rudy Medina credits much of the business’s stability and heart to his wife, who stood as his steadfast partner during the most challenging years. In the beginning, the business was a lean operation consisting of only a few family members and relatives. Side by side, they figured out the demands of the medical supply trade, with Rudy Medina personally visiting tertiary hospitals across the Philippines to introduce specialized surgical tools.
Their hands-on approach helped build long-term trust within the medical community. Rudy Medina made it a point to be there in person, so every client received the high-quality surgical instruments and hospital supplies they needed.
Local Growth to Global Partnerships
As the business grew, so did its vision.
In 1997, Rudy Medina secured an exclusive Philippine distributorship for maxillofacial implants from Medicon company based in Germany.
Momentum continued in 1998 when Rudy Medina expanded the company’s international partnerships with Inor Orthopedics, an Indian manufacturer of orthopedic implants.
These agreements allowed R Medina Surgical Enterprises to supply hospitals and private practitioners with high-quality surgical instruments and orthopedic implants that were previously difficult to find in the country.
Rudy Medina later explored alternative sourcing channels to provide more cost-effective options for healthcare providers.
Global connections allowed him to source affordable orthopedic implants from Pakistan, while focusing on China for medical supplies and devices.
In 2010, the company also ventured into pharmaceutical products to expand its offerings.
Strategic milestones reflect more than business expansion. They proved Rudy Medina’s commitment to raising the standard of the healthcare profession nationwide.
Medical Depot: Adapting Through the Years

Steady growth followed the launch of R Medina Surgical Enterprises. What started as a single store generating a million pesos in monthly sales soon grew to 20 branches in the Bambang area alone.
Rudy Medina officially registered the Medical Depot name with the Intellectual Property Office in October 2016. This foresight secured the brand’s future while the company was still operating as a local powerhouse. The move protected the brand’s identity as the company grew.
However, the 2020 pandemic presented a turning point. Recognizing that customers could no longer travel to Bambang, Rudy Medina made the strategic decision to bring medical products, devices, equipment, and pharmaceutical products closer to the community.
He invested 300 million pesos to launch an expansion into provincial regions and major malls. Medical Depot became a corporation in 2021, marking its transition into a national leader. Large-format stores soon opened in various parts of the Philippines, such as SM, Robinsons, and Ayala malls across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
A Legacy of Hard Work and Heart
The Medical Depot’s history reflects a steady journey of growth built on a quiet commitment to the community.
For Rudy Medina, the true measure of success is the ability to serve. What began as a modest shop in Bambang has grown into a trusted name for hospital equipment and medical supplies, with a vision to open 1,000 branches nationwide.
Service defines the scale of this success. Growth, in his eyes, is about the number of lives touched rather than just the figures on a balance sheet. Rudy Medina often reminds his team that a business only truly grows when its purpose expands alongside it. He believes a business must create opportunities, uplift people, and leave a lasting impact on the communities it serves.
Leading by example is the foundation of his leadership style. Rudy Medina often defies the typical image of a corporate executive. Choosing simple attire and working in the heat of the daily operations rather than a sealed boardroom, he leads through humility. This hands-on approach demonstrates his belief that people follow consistency rather than a title. Remaining grounded allows him to maintain a genuine, unvarnished connection to the mission and the people he leads.
“Business is a never-ending learning experience, and it is a never-ending game,” Rudy Medina explains. “It is a mission that never stops evolving.”
This evolution is fueled by a belief that vision without execution is only a dream. For the Medina family, leadership manifests in fast, decisive action because a moving business learns more than one that waits for the perfect plan.
Even as major companies express interest in Medical Depot, his focus remains on stewardship and growing the business. While others might see a completed mission, Rudy Medina views the current success as merely a foundation, often remarking, “The happiness I find is in this business. This is just the beginning”.
Accomplishing one goal simply reveals the next objective. He often reminds his team that success never truly ends because there is always another client to help, another employee to support, and another dream to build.
This drive stems from a history rooted in hard work. Rudy Medina draws primary inspiration from his father, who worked even on Sundays to provide the early stability their family business needed. That same dedication now extends to the entire Medical Depot team.
“Titles do not move a business. People do.
Rudy Medina often points out that the lifeblood of the company is its people, especially the employees who have stood by the family for decades. He believes loyalty, discipline, and consistency create businesses that last for generations. For him, real leadership means working in the trenches with them and never asking for a sacrifice he is not willing to make himself.
As the company moves into its third generation of leadership, the same grit and discipline that defined a young entrepreneur in Bambang, Manila, remains at the heart of every new store that opens.
Rudy Medina hopes Medical Depot’s story reminds future entrepreneurs that humble beginnings should never limit ambition.
Success belongs to those who stay hungry and grounded, understanding that meaningful work does not end; it simply finds new ways to grow.
